This Week at NCDOT: Scenic Byways and Port Simulator

RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department’s weekly newscast.

Scenic Byways

If you’re looking for a fun, summer day trip, consider taking one of North Carolina’s 60 scenic byways, located from the mountains to the sea. The byway routes are carefully selected as safe and interesting alternatives to the faster-paced and commercial areas found along North Carolina's major highways and interstates.

North Carolina Ports Simulator

As North Carolina’s ports grow and technology changes, it’s important that employees are trained to handle cargo needs of the future safely and efficiently.

The North Carolina Ports recently got a simulator that provides advanced training on skills that employees will need to operate equipment now and in the future. Machine movements, vibrations and a surround sound system in the simulator mimic what it feels and sounds like on the port’s equipment.

Trainers have full control of different scenarios, allowing them to observe the exercise from any angle, add in obstacles and weather conditions, and review employee performance.

Charlotte Gateway Station

It’s been one year since Phase 1 of the Charlotte Gateway Station project kicked off and work is progressing. Targeted for completion in 2022, 2,000 feet of rail track is being put down, five new bridges built and a rail platform constructed.

Gateway Station will serve as Charlotte’s multimodal facility, connecting passenger rail, buses, taxis, ride sharing services and bicycles.
