Comments Sought for Proposed Improvements to Longview Intersection

LONGVIEW – The public is invited to provide input on a project under development to realign the intersection at 33rd Street NW and 34th Street NW at the Catawba/Burke County line. The project also proposes to relocate the existing railroad crossing at 33rd Street NW and 1st Avenue SW.

The project is part of the Greater Hickory Metropolitan Planning Organization’s 2040 Long Range Transportation Plan to improve safety and access to I-40 and industrial areas, including the Hickory Regional Airport. Realigning 33rd Street directly to 34th Street would provide continuity for drivers and increase safety for traffic turning at the intersection.

A public meeting is set from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 6 at the Western Piedmont Council of Governments Conference Room, located at 1880 2nd Avenue NW in Hickory. People may attend the meeting at any time, as no formal presentation will be made.

For those who cannot attend the meeting, they may submit comments in writing, by phone or email through Sept. 6. All comments received will be reviewed and considered for the final design.

More information and a map of the proposed improvements can be found on the NCDOT Public Meeting website.
