RALEIGH– Last year, the N.C. Department of Transportation broke new ground with its unprecedented use of drones in response to the devastating effects of Hurricane Florence. Now, those efforts are being recognized on the national level.
Earlier today, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials named NCDOT's Hurricane Florence Drone Response as one of the “Top 12" projects in the 2019 America's Transportation Awards. The Top 12 are eligible for two top prizes - the Grand Prize, awarded by a panel of judges, and the People's Choice Award, determined by an online vote from the public.
Anyone is welcome to vote for NCDOT's project as part of the People's Choice Award. People can vote once per day, every day, until the competition closes at midnight Oct. 6.
Winners will be announced at the AASHTO annual meeting Oct. 7 in St. Louis. Winners will be awarded $10,000 to a charity or scholarship fund of their choice. Any winnings by NCDOT will go to the North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund.
