Traffic Shift Planned for U.S. 70 East as part of East End Connector Project

DURHAM — As construction on the East End Connector Project continues, a traffic shift for eastbound U.S. 70 is set to begin Friday, Oct. 4 at 8 p.m. Eastbound U.S. 70 traffic will shift over to lanes adjacent to westbound traffic just north of the bridge over N.C. 98.

In addition, South Miami Boulevard/U.S. 70 Business will not have access to eastbound U.S. 70. South Miami Boulevard/U.S. 70 Business will be closed just south of the South Hoover Road. Customers will still be able to access businesses located on South Miami Boulevard just south of Hoover Road.

Following the closure, drivers will need to travel north on Miami Boulevard and right onto N.C. 98/Holloway Street to get onto eastbound U.S. 70.

Motorists need to slow down and pay extra attention as they travel into the work zone and go through the traffic shift.

The traffic shift and closure are expected to be in place until the East End Connector opens to traffic in June 2020.

The East End Connector is a 3.9-mile divided highway that will connect U.S. 70 to the Durham Freeway. The work includes upgrading U.S. 70 to a freeway between Pleasant Drive and N.C. 98. It will provide a multi-lane interstate connection between Interstate 85, the Durham Freeway and I-40 on the east side of Durham.

The new highway, expected to be designated I-885, is expected to help alleviate congestion on the Durham Freeway and on local roads such as U.S. 15-501 and Roxboro, Mangum, Gregson and Duke streets.
