Johnston County Widening Project Requires Temporary Closure

CLAYTON – The N.C. 42 widening project in Johnston County will require a detour for part of the Neuse River Parkway beginning next week.

The parkway is scheduled close at 7 a.m. on May 6 between N.C. 42 and East School Road. Signs will send drivers along a half-mile detour, taking them on East School Road, which intersects the other two roads.

The road is scheduled to reopen by May 27 weather-permitting.

The closure will allow an N.C. Department of Transportation contractor to do necessary tie-in pavement at the intersection of N.C. 42 and Neuse River Parkway. This intersection is using a new traffic signal temporarily set up on wooded poles, which will be replaced with metal poles and mast arms as part of the project.

Work to widen 4.6 miles of N.C. 42 east of Clayton began in 2018, after the NCDOT awarded a $58.7 million contract.

The overall project is expected to be completed and open to traffic by the fall of 2022.
