Rail Safety Week
This year, 10 people have died either by walking on tracks or being struck by a train at a railroad crossing in North Carolina.
These deaths could have been prevented by following a few safety tips:
Always expect a train when coming to a railroad crossing. Modern trains can be difficult to hear and trains always have the right of way;
Never pose for photos on railroad tracks. Walking on railroad tracks is illegal and can be deadly; and
Don’t put yourself or others at risk by driving around lowered crossing arms. Keep your vehicle behind the white line.
The goal of
National Rail Safety Week, which was held this week, is to increase awareness and educate the public about railroad safety.
NC REAL ID Reaches Milestone
The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles reached a milestone with the issuance of its two-millionth REAL ID license or ID enhancement late last week.
Starting Oct. 1, 2021, federal agencies will require a REAL ID, U.S. passport or another form of
federally-approved identification to board commercial airlines and enter many federal buildings or facilities. Obtaining the REAL ID is not a requirement but is easy to get. The process is on the
DMV website.
