RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in
NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.
Volunteers Needed for Statewide Litter Sweep
In the first two months of 2021, the
NCDOT picked up more than one million pounds of litter, but more cleaning up is needed, and you can help in the effort.
NCDOT is holding its
Adopt-A-Highway Spring Litter Sweep from April 10-24. Twice a year, NCDOT asks volunteers to help remove litter from roadsides. Volunteers will be provided with clean-up supplies, including trash bags, gloves, and safety vests. Everyone will be asked to observe COVID-19 safety protocols.
One volunteer got to work early this week - Transportation Secretary Eric Boyette picked up trash along the Knightdale Bypass in Wake County.

St. Patrick's Day Booze It & Lose It
While St. Patrick’s Day is March 17, some people may get an early start on celebrating. Unfortunately, that means more drunk drivers on the road.
Beginning Wednesday, as part of the
Booze It & Lose It Campaign, law enforcement officers from all 100 counties will conduct saturation patrols to remove impaired drivers from the roadways. Motorists caught driving while impaired could face jail time, lose their driving privileges and pay fines.
The
N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program wants to remind you to never drink and drive.
Daylight Saving Time This Weekend
Daylight saving time begins at 2 a.m. Sunday. This time of year can create problems for drivers as the sun rises and sets later in the day.
Make sure to:
-
Ensure your vehicle’s exterior and interior lights are working properly;
