UPDATE: Wilson County Bridge Will Be Rebuilt

UPDATE: The NCDOT contractor is ready to begin this project and close the road May 2. Below is the release from last summer announcing the project. The timeline has been updated in the release.

WILSON – A pre-World War II bridge that carries U.S. 117 over a CSX Corp. railroad track on the outskirts of Wilson will be replaced.

The U.S. 117 bridge near its junction with U.S. 264 in Wilson County is scheduled to close at 7 a.m. May 2 to allow for its demolition, then construction of a new bridge. The road is scheduled to reopen in April 2023.

The detour will send drivers onto Frank Price Church Road, Old Black Creek Road and U.S. 264, returning to US. 117.

The bridge was built in 1922 and upgraded (but not replaced) in 1940. It has reached the end of its useful life.

W.C. English Inc. of Lynchburg, Va., won the nearly $3.9 million contract last year from the N.C. Department of Transportation.
