This Week at NCDOT: Fred Impacts, Vaccine Clinic, Bridge Dedication

RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.

Fred Impacts Southwestern NC

Dozens of roads remain closed due to heavy rainfall from Tropical Depression Fred.

NCDOT crews from across the state are now in Divisions 13 and 14 assisting with the removal of debris, such as rocks and trees, and inspecting and rebuilding roads and bridges.

Drivers in these area should continue to stay off the roads if possible. Never drive through roads with standing water. Never drive around barricades. These are in place to protect you. Please be patient and be safe out there.

For the most up-to-date information on roads, go to drivenc.gov.

NCDOT Wilson County Vaccine Clinic

NCDOT continues to offer opportunities for its employees and their loved ones to get vaccinated.

Last week, Wilson County’s maintenance staff held a vaccine clinic for interested employees, contractors, and their families 12 and older. Many people came to our Wilson County offices so they could get the vaccine of their choice – either Pfizer, Moderna or Johnson and Johnson.

So far, the department has vaccinated more than 1,000 of its employees across the state through clinics like this.

“We’re doing this to protect ourselves, the public that we interact with, and our families and loved ones," said Wilson County Maintenance Engineer Wade Harper. “We’re out here, we’re getting our vaccination, just help encourage others by example.”

More opportunities will be made available in the future for NCDOT employees. To get more information on the vaccine, go to myspot.nc.gov.

Gus Tulloss Bridge Dedication

NCDOT is honoring a former member of the State Board of Transportation. The Sunset Avenue bridge over Wesleyan Boulevard in Rocky Mount was dedicated to Gus Tulloss.

Tulloss is a long-time businessman and served on the N.C. Board of Transportation for 12 years. He was instrumental to the completion of many transportation projects in the Rocky Mount area. Those projects, include the widenings of Country Club Road and Wesleyan Boulevard, and the ongoing improvements to the Sunset Avenue bridge over Interstate 95.

During the dedication, State Transportation Sec. Eric Boyette said “his service with DOT also coincides with many exciting things currently happening in the Rocky Mount area: the DMV HQ completed its move here at the end of last year; the Carolina Connector (CCX) intermodal transportation will be coming online soon; and the Triangle Tyre will anchor expansion in an industrial park off Kingsboro Road east of here.”
