Additional General-Purpose Lane Opening on Interstate 485

CHARLOTTE – Drivers will soon be able to use another lane on I-485 between Rea Road and Providence Road as part of the I-485 express lanes project underway to add an express lane and other corridor improvements between I-77 and U.S. 74 (Independence Boulevard).

Starting tonight, contract crews will temporarily close ramps from Providence Road to the inner loop and entrance/exit ramps at Rea Road to safely tie in the new lane with existing lanes. The closures are scheduled from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday morning, and again Tuesday night if necessary.

Drivers can already use the third general purpose lane on the outer loop that opened Saturday morning.

The project also includes these improvements:

  • Widening the bridge carrying Ballantyne Commons Parkway over I-485 in Charlotte
  • Building an improved structure at Elm Lane over I-485 (open to traffic)
  • Improving the interchange at John Street in Matthews
  • Building an interchange at Weddington Road in Matthews

Drivers should be mindful of crews working in this location and allow extra time to reach their destination.
