Weekend Closure Needed for Union County Project

WESLEY CHAPEL – This weekend, N.C. Department of Transportation contract crews will close the roundabout at New Town Road and Waxhaw – Indian Trail Road to complete work associated with the $1.9 million project.

The roundabout will close from 8 p.m. Friday until 5 p.m. Sunday to place final asphalt surface and thermoplastic pavement markings.

During this time, drivers will follow a posted detour along Will Plyler Road, Waxhaw – Indian Trail Road, Billy Howey Road, Pleasant Grove Road, and Shannon Road. Message boards are currently in place to alert drivers to the closure.

Roundabouts improve safety for drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists. They also help reduce the congestion and backups more typical at traditional intersections with stop signs and traffic signals.

NCDOT has produced a video showing how roundabouts work and improve overall safety. More details and contact information are available on the project website.
