CAROLINA SHORES – A couple of intersections along U.S. 17 (Ocean Highway) in Brunswick County will be upgraded to improve traffic flow and safety.
Beginning Monday, crews will upgrade the highway’s intersections at Hickman Road and at Thomasboro Road/ Pea Landing Road.
The work includes construction of medians, improvement of drainage systems and the addition of signs and traffic signals. The roadway will be upfitted with reduced conflict intersections, which reduce the risk of serious crashes.
A reduced conflict intersection eliminates left turns from a side road onto a busier one. If motorists need to go the other direction, they will travel a short distance and make a safe U-turn in a dedicated lane, as this departmental webpage explains.
Throughout construction, drivers can expect intermittent lane closures. If possible, N.C. Department of Transportation encourages people to avoid the area, and always use caution.
Contractors are expected to complete the project in winter 2023.
