Bridge Girders Going Up on I-485 in Mecklenburg County

CHARLOTTE – As weather permits, contract crews will be setting bridge girders on both sides of I-485 near Ballantyne Commons Parkway this week, requiring intermittent lane closures and rolling road blocks each night from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. The work is part of the I-485 express lanes project in southeast Charlotte.

The existing two-lane bridge on Ballantyne Commons Parkway will be replaced with a new, four-lane bridge, approximately 300 feet long with 12-foot sidewalks and a concrete median. 

The following lane closures are scheduled to allow crews to safely set girders for the new bridge:

Tonight into Wednesday morning

  • Single right lane closure on the inner loop from Providence to Rea Roads from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Double right lane closures on the inner loop from Providence to Rea Roads from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Single left lane closure on the outer loop from Rea to Providence Roads from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Four rolling roadblock operations from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. to set girders, each lasting 30 minutes

Wednesday night/Thursday morning

  • Double left lane closures on the inner loop from Rea to Providence Roads from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Double right lane closures on the outer loop from Providence to Rea Roads from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Four rolling roadblock operations from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. to move cranes
    • Two will occur in each direction, each lasting 30 minutes

Thursday night/Friday morning

  • Double left lane closures on the outer loop from Rea to Providence Roads from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Single left lane closure on the inner loop from Providence to Rea Roads from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Five rolling roadblock operations from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. to set girders, each lasting 30 minutes​

Friday night/Saturday morning

  • Double left lane closures on the outer loop from Rea to Providence Roads from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Single left lane closure on the inner loop from Providence to Rea Roads from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Five rolling roadblock operations from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. to set bridge girders, each lasting 30 minutes
