This Week at NCDOT: Coronavirus Survivor Back On The Job, Move Over Awareness Begins

RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.

NCDOT Employee Survives COVID-19, Returns in New Role

Last summer, Daniel Perry got great news: he was offered his dream job of Division 3 Bridge Maintenance Engineer. He accepted the new position but told his boss he would need to take a few sick days.

Perry was diagnosed with COVID, and it progressively got worse. He was admitted into the hospital’s intensive care unit and would end up on a ventilator for 59 days. Doctors gave him a 6% chance to live.

But Perry survived and was determined.

In early April, Division 3 employees welcomed Perry back to the Castle Hayne office.

“When I originally started with DOT, I was with the bridge department. I left for a while and just always wanted to come back – that’s where my heart was," Daniel said. “Throughout it all I just kept my faith in the Lord. He wasn’t quite ready for me yet."

Move Over Law Awareness Campaign

When you see an emergency vehicle’s lights flashing – it’s important to slow down and move over when possible for first responders.

This weekend, the N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program, State Highway Patrol and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are teaming up to bring awareness to the Move Over Law. For the next few days, you will see more messaging online and on highway message boards.

Since 2017, there have been 149 law enforcement officers killed in traffic-related incidents across the nation, including in North Carolina.

Drivers can face a $250 or more fine for failing to obey the law. Let’s all do our part to keep those, who protect us, safe.
