RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.

N.C. 125 Event

Last week, NCDOT, local, state and federal officials gathered in Roanoke Rapids to celebrate the completion of the N.C. 125 widening and Premier Boulevard extension.

The event was the capstone to a three-and-a-half year, $24.5 million project that also extended and reconfigured some local routes to improve traffic flow, ease congestion and help promote economic growth right of Interstate 95.

Highway Pull Over Safety

Occasionally while driving, you may find it necessary to pull off the side of the highway.

Whether you’re involved in a crash or experiencing a breakdown, you should always follow these safety tips when having to pull over on a highway.

  • Move your vehicle completely onto the shoulder of the road when it is safe to do so;
  • Exit the vehicle by the passenger side, away from the flow of traffic, and do not allow passengers to remain in the vehicle;
  • Stand off the road and away from the vehicle; and
  • If it’s dark, turn on the parking lights or emergency flashers.
Remember to never attempt or make repairs to a vehicle while it is in an area exposed to traffic. Call a tow truck or mechanic for assistance.
