This Week at NCDOT: Major Rail Manufacturing Facility Announced, Alligator River Bridge Grant

RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.

Siemens Mobility Announcement

Siemens Mobility is investing more than 220 million dollars and the new carbon neutral facility will bring 500 plus jobs to Davidson County.

NCDOT contributed a 9.4 million dollar investment for roadway, rail and airport infrastructure needs in the facility area.

This announcement comes as the state’s passenger rail service NC By Train broke the annual record for ridership in 2022 and the trend is continuing in 2023.

Alligator River Bridge Grant

NCDOT joined Governor Roy Cooper and federal leaders to celebrate a major investment made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

A 110-million-dollar mega grant from USDOT will help replace the Alligator River Bridge, a lifeline to and from the Barrier Islands.

More than 4,000 boats pass through the area annually, which stops traffic while the two-lane swing-span opens and closes.

While the aging bridge is maintained, it experiences occasional technical issues that can cause a 99-mile detour for drivers.

The grant will help fund a new fixed-span bridge and installation of broadband infrastructure along U.S. 64 from I-95 in Rocky Mount to N.C. 12 on the Outer Banks.
