This Week at NCDOT: Employee Hosts Ukrainian Family, NC By Train Sale, Litter Sweep Update

RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.

NCDOT Employee Hosts Ukrainian Family

An NCDOT employee known for his work as an engineer for more than two decades, is being recognized for something outside of his day-to-day job. John Conforti and his family are housing a teenage boy and his mother who fled the war in Ukraine. The pair moved in with the Confortis in June 2022 and are thriving at life here in North Carolina.

“We decided we would just go ahead and do it and try and help somebody. Anyone can donate money, but to do something like this is making a real impact," Conforti said.

The two families are now like one; and with the war still going on, the Ukrainian family plans to stay for the foreseeable future with the Confortis.

Spring Litter Sweep Update

Our state is cleaner, thanks to this year’s Spring Litter Sweep. For two weeks in April, NCDOT employees, contractors, and volunteers in all 100 counties picked up nearly 623,000 pounds of litter.

Unfortunately, the job is not done yet and we need your help to keep North Carolina clean and beautiful. To learn more about litter sweeps and adopting-a-highway, go to our website.
