RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in
NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.
Early Flood Warning System
When the next hurricane strikes our state, the N.C. Department of Transportation will be equipped with an advanced flood-warning system that will help save lives and better respond to storm damage.
The system allows NCDOT to analyze and communicate any flood risks to the road network in real time.
This critical information goes to NCDOT maintenance staff responding to flooded roads and washed-out culverts; and benefits local emergency management officials and the public accessing the department's DriveNC.gov website for timely weather-related closures.
The early flood-warning system covers more than 2,000 miles of state-maintained roads, and also allows NCDOT to monitor flood conditions for about 15,000 bridges and culverts statewide.
Aviation ACE Academy
A series of summer camps is teaching hundreds of young people across North Carolina about aviation and careers they can pursue when they grow older.
The N.C. Department of Transportation's Division of Aviation awarded $3,000 grants to 10 airports across the state to assist with aviation and aerospace-themed summer academies for middle and high school students.
The 2023 Aviation Career Education - or ACE - Academy Program seeks to inspire and expose the next generation of talent to careers in air transportation.
Students learn about aviation history, participate in airplane flight simulations, try their hand at flying drones and more.
The ACE Academies are already underway. Parents and students interested in participating in remaining camps this summer can learn more by visiting
ncdot.gov and searching ACE Academies
