RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.
Chief John D. Parrish Bridge Dedication
A former Edenton Police Chief has been memorialized with a bridge named in his honor.
The bridge over Pembroke Creek on West Queen Street in Edenton is now the Chief John D. Parrish Bridge.
Parrish served as Edenton’s Police Chief for twenty years, and was also a Navy veteran, a member of the Edenton Lions Club and an instructor for various law enforcement training schools.
Parrish’s friends and family, including children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren attended the dedication held at Pembroke Creek Park June 16.
Know Your Zone and Hurricane Preparedness
It’s the middle of June and that means it’s hurricane season.
With activity already in the tropics, it’s a good time to ‘Know Your Zone’
‘Know Your Zone’ is a cooperative effort between the North Carolina Department of Public Safety and 20 coastal counties that are the most vulnerable to effects from a tropical system.
By knowing their zone, residents and visitors in those counties will know if and when they need to evacuate, which helps simplify the entire process and make a large scale evacuation much more efficient.
Of course, knowing that zone isn’t the only step North Carolinians should be taking to prepare for the hurricane season. They should also:
- Prepare an evacuation plan
- Assemble disaster supplies to last between three and seven days
- Get an insurance checkup on their homes
- Strengthen their homes against the effects of a tropical storm or hurricane.
Inland residents should also prepare for hurricane season, as storm effects can often be felt well inland.
