DUNN – The N.C. Department of Transportation closed the Pope Road bridge over Interstate 95 in Dunn after it was struck by an overheight vehicle.
An unknown vehicle going north struck the bridge and damaged its steel girders. NCDOT has closed the bridge as a precaution until the damage can be inspected and officials can determine next steps.
The detour is the next exit north at U.S. 421, which is Exit 73.
The Pope Road bridge (Exit 72) has a low-clearance of 14-feet-6-inches, and it has been struck several times in the past – most recently in May when NCDOT made repairs to the bridge.
The bridge is scheduled to be replaced with a taller structure as part of the ongoing I-95 widening project.
