MILL SPRING – N.C. Department of Transportation crews are currently upgrading a 53-year-old bridge in Polk County.
The improvements to a bridge on Moore Road over the Green River required the department to close it last week. A marked detour directing local traffic and secondary road traffic for events at the Tryon International Equestrian Center will remain in place until the operation is complete in November.
The 8.5-mile detour — from one side of the bridge to the other — utilizes Sandy Plains Road, Pea Ridge Road, and John Shehan roads.
NCDOT crews will upgrade three deteriorating beams which will restore the bridge weight limits to 15 tons for single vehicles and 18 tons for tractor trailers.
NCDOT inspects and maintains more than 18,000 structures across the state including more than 110 bridges in Polk County alone.
