HILLSBOROUGH – Overnight closures on Interstate 40 with an on-site detour will allow a contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation to begin bridge removal operations.
Crews will close both lanes of Interstate 40 east over Old N.C. 86 to start bridge removal operations in order to place a new bridge.
The interstate will close near mile marker 261 each night from 12 a.m. until 5 a.m. beginning on March 16, and the demolition work is scheduled to finish on March 20. Old NC 86 will be closed with signed detour route from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. during bridge removal operations.
A detour will guide I-40 east traffic down off the ramp at exit 261, across Old N.C. 86 and to the I-40 east onramp.
Drivers should remain cautious and alert when approaching the work zone and factor the detour into their trips.
