RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.
Train Derailment Exercise
State and local agencies, as well as private rail partners, are working together to make sure we are prepared in the event of a rail emergency.
Gathering at the State Emergency Operations Center in Raleigh, these leaders met to focus on how officials would respond if a train derailment occurred.
During a mock exercise, officials evaluated existing plans while collaborating to ensure a strong response in the event of an incident.
All of the agencies, to make sure that their plans of action both at the state and local level and at the rail road level are good for the proper response for that type of incident. We urge you to plan, prepare and stay informed in the event of an emergency, too. Go to

Operation Clear Track
It’s Rail Safety Week and the department is participating in the Operation Clear Track initiative.
Its goal is to reduce the number of railway crossing and trespassing incidents across the U.S. and Canada – incidents which tragically injure or kill over 2,000 people a year
Operation Clear Track is held each year during Rail Safety Week. Law enforcement across the country work to enforce rail and trespassing laws, and share rail-safety messaging through virtual or face-to-face outreach to drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists
NC A&T Autonomous Shuttle
NCDOT is supporting N.C. A&T State University’s autonomous shuttles , which are navigating a new track. The autonomous shuttles are now running a 1.7 mile route as part of a pilot program.
With this partnership, it’s just part of a larger effort that we have, when we talk about shared and autonomous vehicles. It’s our future and it’s what we look at each and every single day.
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekdays through Friday, Oct. 13, passengers can take a shuttle from campus to downtown Greensboro.
