(Editor's Note: Work on Interstate 40 East finished up early so work on I-40 West moves to tonight instead of Thursday. Information below is updated.)
CLAYTON – Crews plan to shut down portions of Interstate 40 this week as part of ongoing bridge work for the project to widen I 40 from Southeast Raleigh to Clayton.
Weather permitting, I-40 West will close tonight and Thursday from N.C. 42 to U.S. 70 at 10 p.m. reopening the following mornings at 5. Eastbound I-40 will have the median lane closed tonight and Thursday night as well.
Additionally, starting at midnight there will be multiple slow rolls on I-40 East for 30 minutes each to move two cranes from the outside shoulder of I-40 East to the outside shoulder of I-40 West safely.
As a detour, traffic on I-40 West will need to take N.C. 42 East (Exit 312) to U.S. 70 West back to I-40 West.
Drivers should slow down and be alert for crews and equipment going through the work zone.
