RALEIGH - The North Carolina Turnpike Authority is continuing construction of the southern portion of the Complete 540 Project, which will extend the Triangle Expressway (Toll N.C. 540) from N.C. 55 Bypass to Interstate 40.
Beginning on or around April 26 at 7:00 p.m. through 9:00 p.m., East Williams Street between N.C. 55 Bypass and Old Smithfield Road will experience temporary intermittent lane closures. Flaggers will be in place directing traffic through the lane closures. Drivers should expect delays and should pay close attention when driving through the work zone.
After the lane closures end, East Williams Street between N.C. 55 Bypass and Old Smithfield Road is scheduled to temporarily close to through traffic on or around April 26 at 9:00 p.m. through April 27 at 10:00 a.m.
There may be additional lane closures on April 27 at 7:00 p.m. and an additional East Williams Street road closure on or around April 27 at 9:00 p.m. through April 28 at 8:00 a.m.
Local access along East Williams Street will be maintained throughout the scheduled closure. Drivers are strongly encouraged to plan to avoid the area, if possible. If drivers must be in the area, they are advised to take the detour route by following signs along the roadway.
Drivers wishing to access East Williams Street north of the closure:
- Drive west on Old Smithfield Road
- Turn right onto N.C. 55 Bypass
- Turn right onto East Williams Street
Drivers wishing to access East Williams Street south of the closure:
- Drive south on N.C. 55 Bypass
- Make a U-turn on N.C. 55 Bypass
- Turn right onto Old Smithfield Road
- Turn left onto East Williams Street
The road closure and associated detour are weather dependent. Drivers should slow down and pay extra attention when navigating the detour route.
