Traffic Shift and Temporary Ramp Changes Upcoming for I-440

RALEIGH- Contractors for the N.C. Department of Transportation will create temporary traffic patterns this Wednesday on Interstate 440 East as part of the interstate's improvement project.

Beginning Aug. 21, a collector lane, like the existing lane on southbound U.S. 1 from I-40 to Walnut Street, will be created for the Western Boulevard traffic heading on I-440 East and I-440 East going to Wade Avenue and Hillsborough Street. Crews will begin this traffic shift with lane closures on I-440 East at 9 p.m.

Following this traffic shift, a temporary off-ramp for Wade Avenue and Hillsborough Street will be located before the Hillsborough Street bridge. Western Boulevard traffic will then merge into I-440 East at Wade Avenue. Weather permitting, traffic will remain in all this pattern until Sept. 3.

Also tonight, closer to midnight, the Western Boulevard ramp to I-440 East and the I-440 East ramp to Hillsborough Street and Wade Avenue will close so crews can restripe the pavement. During this operation, drivers should follow the posted detour signs. The ramps will reopen by 5 a.m. Aug. 22.

Drivers should stay alert and plan for potential delays during these traffic shifts and closures. The DOT appreciates your patience as work continues to improve the roadways.
