Roundabout Construction Starting Next Week

WAXHAW —  Next week, N.C. Department of Transportation contract crews will start building a roundabout at the intersection of N.C. 200 and Potter Road in Union County, requiring the intersection to be closed to traffic after rush hour Monday morning. The contractor, TrueRock Construction LLC of Monroe, earned the $2.3 million project this summer.

During construction, non-truck traffic will follow a posted detour along Providence Road South, Harkey Road, Potter Road, Mary Elizabeth Church Road, Tom Starnes Road and McWhorter Road.

Trucks will follow a separate detour from N.C. 200 to South Rocky River Road, crossing into South Carolina to Shiloh Unity Road, returning to N.C. 200.

The intersection is scheduled to open before the end of the year.

Roundabouts improve safety for drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists. They also help reduce the congestion and backups more typical at traditional intersections with stop signs and traffic signals.

NCDOT has produced a video showing how roundabouts work and improve overall safety.
