WINSTON SALEM– This weekend, a contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation will close a lane of I-40 East in Forsyth County, weather permitting, as part of the Winston-Salem Northern Beltway Project.
The closure will reduce I-40 East to one lane between Exit 196 (I-74 / U.S. 311) and Exit 201 (Union Cross Road), beginning Friday, Oct. 11 at 9 p.m. and lasting until 5 a.m. Monday.
This work is necessary for crews to safely widen a section of the roadway and implement a temporary traffic shift. The shift will allow for the installation of underground drainage under the current pavement, which will help stop water from building up on the surface
Drivers can detour around the work zone by taking Exit 196 (I-74 / U.S. 311) to Exit 59 (Union Cross Road). After turning left onto Union Cross Road, they can access the I-40 interchange.
Eastbound I-40 through traffic is encouraged to use U.S.421 (Salem Parkway) to avoid the work zone.
Drivers should exercise caution in the work area and anticipate possible delays.
