RALEIGH - The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.
Thanksgiving Travel
The North Carolina Department of Transportation is suspending most construction activity along major highways to keep lanes open for holiday travel.
Where possible, work along interstates, U.S. routes, and key N.C. routes will be suspended through the evening of Dec. 2nd.
Also, for drivers headed to or coming from Tennessee for the holiday, please remember Interstate 40 is currently closed near the state line.
Before you hit the road, be sure to visit DriveNC.gov for the latest traffic updates.
Click It or Ticket
The Governor’s Highway Safety Program annual Thanksgiving
Click It or Ticket campaign is underway.
Law enforcement officers across the state are stepping up patrols and checkpoints to catch drivers who are speeding, driving while impaired, or not wearing their seatbelts.
Watch for Deer
With days now shorter and darkness falling earlier, it's important to stay alert, especially for deer.
This time of year, deer are more active, particularly at dusk and dawn.
Thousands of deer-related crashes happen each year in North Carolina.
To reduce the risk:
- Slow down, especially in deer-prone areas and where deer signs are located.
- Use your high beams when possible, but be prepared to dim them for oncoming traffic.
- Stay alert and watch the sides of the road for movement.
