This Week at NCDOT: Don't Take Pictures of Wildflower Beds, Perritte Bridge Dedication, NCDMV Warns of Fraudulent Scams

RALEIGH - The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.

Don't Take Pictures of Wildflower Beds

It’s almost summer and our Wildflower Program remains an integral part of highway beautification in our state.

The N.C. Department of Transportation Wildflower Program began in 1985 and is maintained by specialists in the agency’s Roadside Environmental unit.

The wildflowers are beautiful, but please enjoy them from a distance.

These areas are not designed for public access and stopping on the highway can pose significant safety risks to both you and others on the road.

Perritte Bridge Dedication

A Columbus County bridge now bears the name of a fallen officer.

NCDOT recently dedicated the N.C. 410 bridge over Beaver Dam Swamp after Franklin D. Perritte.

The bridge, which is halfway between Tabor City and Chadbourn, will honor Perritte who was an inspector for what was formerly known as the Enforcement Section of the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles.

Perritte was killed in a high-speed pursuit in the line of duty in 1995.

Perritte previously served with other agencies, including the State Highway Patrol and the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office.

NCDMV Warns of Fraudulent Scams

The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles is alerting the public about a surge in fraudulent text message alerts.

These scams appear to come from the NCDMV but request payment for fees, fines, or tolls.

The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles will never request payments over text message.

So if you receive one of these text messages, report it as spam and delete it immediately. Never respond to these messages and do not click on any links or provide personal information.
