This Week at NCDOT: Independence Day Travel, State Roadeo

RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.

Independence Day Travel

The Independence Day holiday weekend is almost here! Most construction on interstates and state routes will be suspended for the holiday July 3 - 8.

NCDOT has some travel tips everyone should follow to stay safe:

  • Leave early;
  • Drive responsibly;
  • Allow extra time; and
  • Avoid driving distracted and pay attention to your surroundings.

Remember several roads and bridges are closed in Western North Carolina due to Hurricane Helene. Use caution when traveling this 4th of July and make sure to check DriveNC.gov for alternative routes and real-time travel information.

State Roadeo

NCDOT staff from across the state came together to participate in the Equipment Operators Safety Training Conference, also known as the State Roadeo.

"When you can come out and practice your safety skills in a competitive level, when you're competing against each other, challenging each other to see who's the best at whatever event that you're doing, it's always good," said Carlos Melton, Level-4 Transportation Worker.

Maintenance staff from each highway division compete in eight categories, showcasing their expertise in safely operating heavy equipment.

Winners from this event will compete against other state transportation agencies later this year.
