RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.

Operation Firecracker 'Booze It & Lose It' Campaign
This year’s Operation Firecracker ‘Booze It & Lose It’ campaign runs through July 6. Law enforcement across the state is increasing patrols to discourage impaired driving.

Make sure to have a sober ride home if alcohol is involved. Your safety is top priority and should never be risked.

Helene Update
A temporary road and bridge enabling residents and visitors entry to Chimney Rock State Park are open.

NCDOT leadership took part in a ceremony celebrating the reopening of the park exactly nine months after Hurricane Helene.

Bridge Dedications
The Parkton Tobermory Road bridge over Interstate 95 in Robeson County is now named in honor of Officer Bobby J. Furmage, who was killed in the line of duty in 1970.

In Johnston County, the N.C. 36 Veteran’s Parkway bridge over I-40 now bears the name of Trooper AJ Stocks, who was killed in the line of duty in 2008.

DMV Operational Changes
To prevent long lines in the summer heat, all driver license offices will serve walk-in customers all day.

This includes examiners checking in customers and then directing people to wait in their vehicle until space is available.

DMV staff will also review documents to ensure check-ins flow smoothly and alert customers with a text when it is their turn to be served.
