ASHEVILLE – The N.C. Department of Transportation recently awarded a $7 million project to Watson Construction of Franklin to improve Haywood Road from Patton Avenue to Ridgelawn Avenue.
The project includes several pedestrian upgrades including curb ramp replacements, high-visibility crosswalks, pedestrian bulb-outs, and signage with flashing beacons at mid-block crossings.
Bike lanes are planned from Patton to Sulphur Springs and from Richmond Ave to Ridgelawn. The middle section will remain in the current configuration with the center turn lane.
The curb ramp upgrades will begin this summer and are expected to continue into winter months. The final pavement markings with bike lanes will be installed after resurfacing is completed in the summer 2026.
NCDOT officials remind drivers to remain alert, drive with caution and obey all posted traffic signs.
