DAVIDSON – As construction continues on the roundabout at Robert Walker Drive and Davidson-Concord Road in Davidson, some traffic patterns will be changing as construction shifts into its next phase next week.
Starting Wednesday, Aug. 13, contractor Efficient Developments LLC will shift southbound traffic onto the new roundabout alignment, while northbound traffic will stay in its current pattern. This will allow contract crews to safely work in the area between the two alignments.
This phase will also restrict some traffic movements on the east side of Robert Walker Drive:
- Northbound drivers will be limited to right in/right out movements
- Southbound drivers will be detoured along Apollinaire Drive, Reverdy Drive, Wooden Tee Drive, returning to Robert Walker Drive
- Leaving River Run Park, drivers will be directed right from Robert Walker Drive into the roundabout. Drivers can continue through the roundabout to go south on Davidson-Concord Road
Traffic will be shifted onto the new alignment when paving is complete in three to four weeks, then the old roadway will be removed.
NCDOT has produced a video showing how roundabouts work and improve overall safety. Roundabouts improve safety for drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists. They also help reduce the congestion and backups more typical at traditional intersections with stop signs and traffic signals.
