RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.
N.C. State Fair Rail Safety
It’s that time of year again! The N.C. State Fair is underway. Be sure to stop by Safety City, hosted by the Governor’s Highway Safety Program and its partners, for interactive games and transportation safety tips for all ages.
NC By Train, the state’s intercity passenger rail service, is making its iconic annual special stop at the State Fair through Oct. 26.
How ever you ride to this year’s State Fair, everyone needs to pay close attention to rail safety precautions at this special stop and around the fairgrounds.
“We have fenced the entire limits of the fair this year. Any place there is fencing, we want to make sure that we are staying away from the fence, and we’re not crossing the fencing on to the railroad corridor for any reason. We want to make we are only using the designated crossing, which is Powell Drive,” said Troy Creasy, Rail Division Branch Manager of Design and Construction.
Here are some important rail safety reminders:
- Train tracks are not a shortcut.
- Trains can be quieter than you realize especially around large crowds.
- Stop and look in both directions, and only cross at the designated areas.

National Walk, Bike and Roll to School Day
Safety for those walking is also a priority for NCDOT.
State Transportation Secretary Daniel Johnson and local officials joined students and families from Hunter Magnet Elementary in Raleigh for the National Walk, Bike and Roll to School Day event last week.
The annual event encourages families to walk or bike to school while raising awareness about pedestrian safety and the importance of walkable neighborhoods.
This year nearly 100 North Carolina schools participated in the event.
Fall Litter Sweep
NCDOT recently wrapped up the Fall Litter Sweep campaign collecting 496,140 pounds of litter during the two-week sweep.
NCDOT has picked up over 8 million pounds of litter in 2025.
2025 NCDOT Customer Service Survey
Tell us how we’re doing! NCDOT issued its annual customer service survey to help the department identify ways to make its transportation network, programs and services safer, more efficient and customer focused. This survey also includes feedback for the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles.
The survey is available on
NCDOT.gov and closes Nov. 7.
