This Week at NCDOT: Chantal Recovery, Helene Funding Boost, NCDMV Saturday Hours

​​RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast

Chantal Recovery

North Carolina Department of Transportation crews in the central region of the state continue to assess the damage left behind after this week’s storm. 

Tropical Storm Chantal brought heavy rain and gusty winds this week. At its peak over 100 roads were closed.

Drivers may continue to see crews in affected areas as cleanup and repairs progress. Please drive with caution, avoid standing water, and follow all posted detours and barricades, they are there for your safety.

Helene Funding Boost

The department is receiving a boost in its recovery efforts following the approval of a new state relief package for Hurricane Helene. The legislature unanimously passed the fifth relief bill. 

Governor Josh Stein has signed House Bill 1012 into law, allocating $700 million for Hurricane Helene recovery. Of that amount, nearly $300 million will be directed to NCDOT to be used for recovery in impacted areas. 

NCDMV Saturdays 

A reminder to take advantage of Saturday hours this summer at the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles.

Through Aug. 23, 20 offices will be open on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. for walk-in services.  

Services offered during these hours include driver license or ID card renewals, duplicate orders, address changes, REAL ID issuances, and road tests for customers who have already completed the knowledge and written tests.
