ROCKY MOUNT – The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) today announced the launch of consecutive online renewal options for state ID cards, allowing eligible customers to renew online for a second time without an in-person visit. This final provision of Senate Bill 245, signed into law by Gov. Josh Stein on Sept. 30, completes a series of enhancements that have allowed nearly 80,000 additional transactions to be completed online in the nine weeks since they were made available.
"This completes the implementation of Senate Bill 245 by bringing the same convenience we've extended to driver license holders to state ID customers," said NCDMV Commissioner Paul Tine. "From teen driver upgrades to back-to-back online renewals, these changes are reducing lines at our offices and making government services more accessible for everyone. We've seen incredible uptake already – nearly 80,000 additional online renewals in just nine weeks – and we're excited to build on that momentum."
Effective immediately, North Carolinians with a non-REAL ID state ID card can renew online two times in a row. A REAL ID state ID card can be renewed online a second time in a row if the customer has had an in-person transaction since their last renewal. For many people, that in-person transaction was to get a REAL ID, but it could also have been for a name change, or an in-person address change or duplicate for a lost ID.
This online service expansion, projected to enable up to 400,000 additional online transactions annually, has been rolled out in phases over the last couple of months:
- On Oct. 7, NCDMV announced non-REAL ID driver licenses could be renewed online two times in a row.
- On Oct. 20, NCDMV announced that REAL ID driver license could be renewed online two times in a row if the customer has had an in-person transaction since their last renewal.
- On Nov. 4, NCDMV announced that teen drivers could upgrade from a Level 2 Limited Provisional License to a Level 3 Full Provisional License entirely online.
Together, these expansions have streamlined services for nearly 80,000 customers in just nine weeks, while also freeing up resources for those requiring in-person assistance.
