The N.C. Department of Transportation first completed a feasibility study for the proposed Airport Parkway project in 1998. The project was then included in the 2016 Cabarrus-Rowan Metropolitan Planning Organization Comprehensive Transportation Plan.
The project is listed in the
State Transportation Improvement Program as Project No. U-5901.
Preliminary engineering activities for this project resumed in 2023.
