  • What phase is the project currently in?

The project has completed the environmental documentation phase and is now moving into final design. This includes detailed engineering work and preparation for right-of-way acquisition and construction.

  • What is the current project schedule?

Currently, Right-of-way acquisition is scheduled for spring 2028, with construction set to begin summer 2031. This schedule is tentative and subject to change.

  • What is early acquisition and why is it happening now?

Early acquisition allows the project team to begin purchasing select parcels ahead of full right-of-way acquisition. These acquisitions may include parcels needed for utility relocations, as well as other strategic, complex, hardship, or protective acquisitions. This approach helps reduce delays and supports the timely delivery of the project. Early acquisition began in September 2025. Please reach out to NCDOT Project Manager Sara Sherman, P.E. for more information on early acquisitions.

  • Will property owners be contacted directly?

Yes. Property owners whose parcels are part of the early acquisition phase will be contacted individually by NCDOT representatives or authorized agents. These conversations began in September 2025 and remain ongoing.

  • What is the purpose of the fieldwork that began in September, 2025?

Field teams began supplemental surveys, utility locates, septic tank assessments and other site-specific evaluations in September, 2025. This work is necessary to inform final design and ensure environmental compliance.

  • Will this project involve tolling?

The current State Transportation Improvement Program, or STIP includes language related to tolling. While no final decisions have been made, NCDOT will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.

  • How will the public be kept informed?

NCDOT is committed to transparent and ongoing communication. Updates will be shared through the project website, public meetings (as needed) and direct outreach to affected property owners.

  • Who can I contact with questions?

Please reach out to NCDOT Project Manager Sara Sherman, P.E. for more information.
