The six-lane 18.8-mile Triangle Expressway – North Carolina's first
modern toll road and the largest transportation infrastructure project in the state's history – connects N.C. 540 between N.C. 55 and N.C. 54 in Wake and Durham counties
Completed in December 2012 at a cost of approximately $1 billion, it utilizes all-electronic tolling technology while improving travel in the region and commute times in and out of Research Triangle Park.
High-speed cameras mounted on gantries along the Triangle Expressway capture images of license plates of vehicles that pass through toll zones. The N.C. Turnpike Authority's customer service center processes this information and then sends invoices to the vehicles' registered owners.
Drivers can also purchase an electronic transponder – called
NC Quick Pass – that automatically deducts tolls from a pre-paid account and provides a 35 percent discount off the bill-by-mail toll rate.
