C.F. Harvey Parkway on Track

KINSTON – Driving in Lenoir County will get easier when a new, four-lane divided freeway opens in a few years.

An N.C. Department of Transportation contractor is extending N.C. 148, known as the C.F. Harvey Parkway, from N.C. 58 to N.C. 11, a distance of almost 5 miles. Construction began earlier this year.

The primary purpose of the project is to improve road connectivity in northern Lenoir County, including along U.S. 70 and in the vicinity of the Global TransPark. The new highway also will improve regional access to Pitt County.

“One of the best features of the C.F. Harvey Parkway Extension project is that it will be controlled access,” said Aaron Bullard, the NCDOT resident engineer overseeing the project.  “This means that vehicles will only be able to get on the freeway at interchanges, as well as from N.C. 58 and N.C. 11. Controlled access roads tend to move traffic faster, with much less of the stop and go that often causes congestion.”

This $73.5 million project is on track to be substantially completed by September 2021.
