Public Meeting for Proposed Removal of Stanly County Bridge

ALBEMARLE – The N.C. Department of Transportation has scheduled a public meeting to share details about a proposed project to remove the bridge taking Bethlehem Church Road over Long Creek, west of Prince Road near Aquadale.

Built in 1950, the one-lane bridge was reconstructed in 1982, and currently carries an average of 220 vehicles per day. The local NCDOT division is proposing to demolish the bridge and close Bethlehem Church Road at this crossing, as the cost to replace the bridge would exceed $2 million.

The meeting will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30, at Aquadale Elementary School, 11707 N.C. 138. Interested citizens may attend the meeting at any time, as no formal presentation will be made.

For people who cannot attend the meeting, comments can be submitted in writing, by phone or email through Sept. 13. All comments received will be reviewed and suggestions incorporated as the project progresses.

To send comments or learn more, contact NCDOT Division 10 Bridge Program Manager Garland Haywood at 704-983-4421 or 716 W. Main Street, Albemarle, N.C. 28001.

NCDOT will provide auxiliary aids and services under the Americans with Disabilities Act for disabled persons who wish to participate in this meeting. Anyone requiring special services should contact Diane Wilson at (919) 707-6073 as early as possible so arrangements can be made.

Persons who speak Spanish and have a limited ability to read, speak or understand English may receive interpretive services upon request prior to the meeting by calling 1-800-481-6494.
