Business 40 to Close Friday for Girder Installation on Bridge

WINSTON-SALEM –  A portion of Business 40 will be closed from Friday night through Sunday afternoon.

At 7 p.m. Friday,  the inside lanes of Business 40 in Winston-Salem will be closed in both directions at the Peters Creek Parkway and Cloverdale Avenue exits.

At 10 p.m., all four lanes will be closed at the approach to Peters Creek Parkway.

The N.C. Dept. of Transportation will be setting 16 girders, or beams, for the second phase of the Peters Creek Parkway bridge. They will be placed over Business 40. Additionally, fall protection and overhang supports will be installed.

“This work cannot be performed over live traffic, for obvious safety reasons,” said NCDOT Resident Engineer Larry Shaver. “A crane will be parked on Business 40 to lift the 50,000-lb., 90-feet long concrete girders into place.”

The work is scheduled to be completed by 4 p.m. Sunday. If the work is finished sooner, the highway will open earlier.

The following detours have been established:

  • Business 40 westbound traffic will be directed to Peters Creek Parkway, to West First Street, to Cloverdale Avenue and then back to Business 40.
  • Business 40 eastbound traffic will be directed to Cloverdale Avenue, to West First Street, to Peters Creek Parkway and back to Business 40.

Shaver encouraged motorists to use I-40 and U.S. 52 instead of Business 40.

All of this work is in preparation for the closing of Business 40 in November. NCDOT urges drivers to explore Winston-Salem to identify two alternative routes to get to your destination.

An audio recording of the detour routes is available by calling 336-747-7855.
