Upcoming Traffic Shifts for Capital Boulevard Project in Raleigh

RALEIGH – Work that is part of the Capital Boulevard bridge replacements project will require a pair of long-term traffic shifts set to go in effect this October.

Starting Tuesday, October 2, traffic heading southbound on Capital Boulevard looking to exit onto Peace Street will no longer be able to use the existing ramp. Motorists will instead travel over Peace Street, and then turn right on to a new square loop interchange for Capital Boulevard and Peace Street. The currently used on/off ramp at Peace Street will be permanently closed. Instead drivers will use Johnson Street and Harrington Street to get on or off southbound Capital Boulevard at Peace Street at a new traffic light intersection.

On Monday, October 8, contractors will be beginning work on the Wade Avenue flyover ramp. It is designed to connect northbound Capital Boulevard traffic with westbound Wade Avenue. The work will require the closure of the existing Wade Avenue on/off ramp to allow the contractor space to install the new flyover ramps to the new bridge at that location.

Motorists going from northbound Capital Boulevard to Wade Avenue and vice versa will be detoured onto Peace Street, Glenwood Avenue, and Cole Street. Detour signs will be placed throughout the route to guide traffic.

The ramp from northbound Capital Boulevard to Wade Avenue will be closed for 60 days, while the loop from Wade Avenue to northbound Capital Boulevard will be closed for 180 days.

The shifts’ starting dates are dependent on weather and subject to delay if weather conditions are poor.

Drivers are urged to slow down and pay attention as they approach the work zones and travel along the short detour routes.

Updated information on the project to replace the Wade Avenue ramp bridge, and the Capital Boulevard bridge over Peace Street is available through a variety of means, including the project webpage, as well as the NCDOT Triangle Twitter feed.
