Public Meeting Scheduled for Roadway Improvements in Raleigh

RALEIGH – The N.C. Department of Transportation will hold two public meetings next week regarding the proposed conversion of U.S. 1 (Capital Boulevard) to a controlled-access highway from I-540 to Purnell Road/Harris Road. The primary purpose of the project is to reduce traffic congestion and improve travel times, maintaining regional mobility and local connectivity.

A controlled-access highway is one on which access is provided only via ramps at interchanges. Some cross-streets will be grade separated, and no driveway connections will be allowed.

The project rose through the State Transportation Improvements Program based on a need for improvements on the route and to accommodate traffic concerns and address safety issues.

Vicinity maps of the preliminary proposed project can be found at https://www.ncdot.gov/news/public-meetings/Pages/u-5307-2018-10-09.aspx.

The first meeting will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 9, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Lifepointe Church, 9500 Durant Road, Raleigh. The second will take place on Thursday, Oct. 11, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Renaissance Centre, 405 Brooks Street, Wake Forest.

Interested residents may attend at any time during the meeting hours, as no formal presentation will be made.

NCDOT representatives will be available to answer questions and listen to comments regarding the project. Comments may also be submitted via email or phone by November 11. Comments received will be taken into consideration as the project is finalized.

For additional information or to submit a comment after the meeting, contact NCDOT Project Manager David Stark, P.E., at 919-707-6605.
