Options Available for West Jefferson Intersection

WEST JEFFERSON — The N.C. Department of Transportation is seeking public feedback on proposed improvements to a busy intersection in West Jefferson.

The proposed project rose through the State Transportation Improvement Program to the funding stage based on a need for intersection improvements on U.S. 221 Business/N.C. 194 and Beaver Creek School Road. The changes would accommodate traffic concerns and improve driver safety.

The N.C. Department of Transportation will introduce two options for the project and solicit ideas during a public meeting from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the West Jefferson Town Hall, 1 South Jefferson Ave..

The two different proposals took precedence over others after NCDOT staff heard from the public during a meeting in July and conducted additional traffic analysis. The first option is a short superstreet that would reduce the possibility of T-bone and head-on crashes by redirecting traffic to make right turns to and from side streets, including Beaver Creek School Road, Crescent Lane and Vista Drive. The second option is a five-leg roundabout that provides direct access to all area roads while reducing the possibility of dangerous crashes.

Maps of the two proposals are available online. Citizens may drop in to the meeting at any time as no presentations will be made regarding the project. The opportunity to submit written comments will be provided at the meeting or can be done via phone, email or mail by Nov. 15, 2018.
