Upcoming Nightly Closures for Capital Boulevard in Raleigh

RALEIGH Work that is part of the Capital Boulevard bridge replacements project will require a series of short-term nightly closures.

Starting tonight, contractors will begin removing the Wade Avenue bridge over northbound Capital Boulevard and eventually progress to removing the portion hanging over the southbound section of the boulevard. Work is performed at night to ensure motorist safety and lessen impacts to traffic.

The bridge was closed earlier this month to allow crews to prepare for its removal. The process is expected to last about two weeks, with closures occurring nightly Sunday thru Thursday, from 12 to 5 a.m. The northbound portion of Capital Boulevard will close first and reopen once the contractors have progressed over to the southbound side. Once that occurs, the southbound section of the Boulevard will close until the bridge is completely removed.

While northbound Capital Boulevard is closed, traffic looking to continue northbound on the Boulevard will be detoured onto Peace Street and North Person Street before returning to the roadway.

Traffic looking to use southbound Capital Boulevard when it is closed will be directed to exit onto westbound Wade Avenue and then utilize a temporary crossover to use eastbound Wade Avenue to re-access the southbound Boulevard.

The work and closures are dependent on weather and subject to delay if weather conditions are poor.

Drivers are urged to slow down and pay attention as they approach the work zones and travel along the short detour routes.

The new bridge carrying traffic from northbound Capital Boulevard onto Wade Avenue is expected to be open in December.

Updated information on the project to replace the Wade Avenue ramp bridge, and the Capital Boulevard bridge over Peace Street is available through a variety of means, including the project website, as well as the NCDOT Triangle twitter feed.
