Camden Road Would Be Widened in Cumberland County

HOPE MILLS – People can attend an open house next week to learn more about a proposal to widen a 3.3-mile section of Camden Road in the Hope Mills area.

State and local transportation planners are proposing widening Camden Road to alleviate growing congestion and improve safety.

The N.C. Department of Transportation will hold an informal open house from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Hope Mills Public Library’s Meeting Room at 3411 Golfview Road. People may look at preliminary design maps of the roadway improvements, ask questions and give the department feedback on the proposal.

NCDOT and the Fayetteville Area Metropolitan Planning Organization have identified a need to improve the road between N.C. 59 (Main Street) in Hope Mills and the Fayetteville Outer Loop interchange that will be built at Camden Road in western Cumberland County. Most of this congested stretch has two travel lanes and an open center turn lane. The project would widen the road to four lanes with a raised median, a move that would improve safety and traffic flow.

In recent years, new residential and commercial development have popped up along this road, which also serves a shopping district anchored by the 14-screen Stone Theatres.

The proposed project was scored through the department’s prioritization process and competed well with other highway needs around the state. It has received funding in the State Transportation Improvement Program.

The project’s overall cost is estimated to be about $29 million, and construction is scheduled to begin in 2023.

People may view the preliminary design maps when they are posted on this NCDOT website. Comments sent by Nov. 30 will be reviewed and considered for the final design.
