Public Meeting Set for Savannah Creek Bridge

SYLVA Plans are coming together to replace a 67-year-old bridge on N.C. 116 over Savannah Creek in Jackson County.

The N.C. Department of Transportation invites the public to a Nov. 15 meeting regarding the proposal to replace the bridge. The meeting will be held from 4-7 p.m. at Woodland Church of Christ, 146 Weldon Hall Road, in Sylva.

The project will include widening lanes to 12 feet with five-foot shoulders on both sides of N.C. 116 and realigning Webster Road about 50 feet to the south. During construction, through traffic should be maintained on-site — instead of a detour — and roads on both sides of the bridge will be accessible.

The existing concrete bridge has poor components and is deteriorating. With its narrow lanes, the bridge also no longer meets the demands of traffic. N.C. 116 had an average of  4,800 vehicles per day west of the bridge and 6,300 vehicles per day one mile east of the bridge.

NCDOT officials invite the public to the meeting to review and comment on the proposed replacement. Maps and other information will be posted to the NCDOT website when they become available. Comments may be submitted at the meeting, over the phone, via mail or email until Nov. 29.
