This Week at NCDOT: Holiday Travel and Mobi Award Applications

RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department’s weekly newscast.

Holiday Travel
This year, AAA estimates that more than 54 million Americans will be traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday, a nearly five percent increase over 2017.

Drivers will encounter less road construction as the department is suspending most road and lane closures on major highways from Tuesday, Nov. 20 until Monday, Nov. 26.

For those getting on the road to visit family, don’t forget these tips that can help you arrive safely:

  • Try to leave early and get a head start on your trip or travel during non-peak hours;
  • Visit drivenc.gov to get current travel information about road incidents or closures on your route;
  • Put down your cell phone and focus on the road – distracted driving is one of the main causes of crashes; and
  • Be patient and obey the posted speed limit. Yours and others’ lives matter.

Click it or Ticket enforcement will also be increasing as law enforcement looks to keep drivers safe. While traveling, remember to follow the rules and buckle up so everyone stays safe.

Sunday, Nov. 18 is World Day of Remembrance for road traffic victims. Let’s work together so no more families lose loved ones.

The NCDOT Mobi Awards Applications
NCDOT wants to honor North Carolina communities that have completed projects which used different modes of transportation to make travel easier and more efficient.

The department is calling on cities, counties and others to submit entries for the first NCDOT Mobi (“Mobility”) Awards. The awards will showcase the important role that investments in aviation, bike and pedestrian paths, ferries, roadways, public transportation and rail play in creating healthy, vibrant communities. Top multimodal projects will be awarded in five categories: Urban, Suburban, Rural, Tourism, and Innovation.

Applications are due Jan. 22, 2019, so apply today.
